The displacer (rotor), depending on its position, heats the air in the chamber, or cools it. The heated air expands and pushes the piston.
The cooled air contracts and sucks the piston in. The alternation creates rotation.

The top face must be heated as much as possible and the bottom face as cool as possible for optimal operation.
The top and bottom faces are separated to prevent heat conduction between them.
